Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

MedGlobal recognizes that access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is closely linked to health. Many of the communities that MedGlobal serves  have challenges accessing these basic necessities, leaving them at risk of illness, such as waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, and dysentery. WASH necessities are also essential in preventing and protecting human health during infectious disease outbreaks like the current COVID-19 pandemic.

To ensure community health, WASH services should be provided in households, schools, healthcare facilities, refugee and displaced person camps, and remote locations; MedGlobal helps provide these services after disease outbreaks, natural disasters caused by climate change, and in war settings. For example, MedGlobal has built latrines and water tanks, plus provided water trucking, in displaced person camps in both Yemen and Sudan. We also aim to improve WASH at health facilities by coupling facility refurbishment and donations of medical equipment with construction of toilets and handwashing stations, plus donations of cleaning equipment.

WASH is also important in acute emergency responses. In August 2022, MedGlobal implemented one of the longest emergency flood relief operations in Sunamganj, Sylhet providing WASH kits to fight acute watery diarrhea (AWD) alongside standard healthcare services and relief goods. This response used mobile medical teams in boats to get to hard-to-reach communities, benefitting 32,000 people.
