Emergency Response: Support Lebanon in Crisis

The crisis in Lebanon has just gotten worse.

On Sunday, August 15, a tank storing gasoline in northern Lebanon exploded, killing at least 28 people and injuring at least 79 people. This comes as the fuel shortages across Lebanon have become unbearable. MedGlobal is working with the local Health Cluster and partners to begin a rapid response to support two hospitals in Tripoli and Beirut that are attending to the injured.

Throughout Lebanon, the health system is on the verge of collapse and support is critically needed.

Electricity is widely unavailable, which is especially deadly during the summer heat. Hospitals and health centers barely have enough fuel to treat patients and there is a complete shortage of many life-saving medications, all during a COVID fourth wave. Basic goods such as baby formula are largely lacking, which has resulted in surging prices. Millions of people are on the brink of losing access to safe water. Over 77% of people in Lebanon live at or below the poverty line. The situation is even more dire for the over 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, 90% of whom live in extreme poverty.

Our Lebanon team has been providing a range of health and humanitarian services throughout the country – from hospital support following last year’s Beirut blast, to at-home elderly health care programs, to winterization supplies for refugee families. We now need your support to ramp up our emergency response in Beirut and Tripoli.
