India Emergency
COVID-19 Response

How You Can Help

We’re working with partners to ensure a rapid medical response in India with oxygen tanks, tents and tubes, ICU beds, PPE, and decontamination units.

India has rapidly become the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis and the most dire oxygen crisis in the world. The country is seeing record cases of COVID-19, with more than 220,000 daily cases and over 4,500 deaths being recorded in a single day, pushing the total number of fatalities past 300,000. MedGlobal is working with partners, including Project HOPE, to rapidly respond to this crisis with the most critically needed medical equipment, PPE to protect health workers, and oxygen support.

COVID-19 Emergency

The COVID-19 surge in India is devastating the population. COVID-19 infection and death rates in India are the highest ever seen, and have increased exponentially over the last few weeks, reaching over 391,232 new cases and over 4,205 deaths being recorded in a single day, on May 12. However, the true numbers of cases and deaths are likely to be higher, with experts warning that the real number could be as much as 30 times higher. Many people are not getting tested or unable to access testing, and many deaths particularly in rural areas go unregistered.

Hospitals and ICUs are over capacity across India. Outside many medical facilities, crowds have gathered with families trying to arrange care for their loved ones and access oxygen. Over the past 2 weeks there has been a 215% increase in COVID-19 death rate in India, with fears that this number will continue to go up. The increasing death toll is expected to increase into May, in large part due to the lack of oxygen and PPE.

Oxygen Crisis

“There’s no oxygen. The system is broken down and we’re losing patients.”

This is from a doctor in New Delhi. Medical providers and family members of COVID patients across the countries are testifying daily about the dire lack of oxygen, which has run perilously low. Hospitals are running out of oxygen to treat patients. As of April 27, India is in need of 13.5 million cubic meters of oxygen per day, the greatest demand for oxygen out of all other low, lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries.

Medical oxygen is life-saving for patients struggling to breathe. The need for oxygen globally has surged during the pandemic due to respiratory distress caused by the virus. Around one in five people suffering from COVID-19 require oxygen therapy. In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), this need is hard to meet. More than half of all hospitals in LMICs lack reliable access to medical oxygen, leading to countless patient deaths. See Our Oxygen Work page to view the COVID-19 Oxygen Needs Tracker and read more about other critical oxygen crisis responses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Response

MedGlobal is working with partners like Project HOPE and local organizations to ensure a rapid medical response. MedGlobal is supporting partners to facilitate the rapid procurement and distribution of PPE, oxygen supplies, ICU equipment, ventilators, and other critical items to support the overwhelmed health care system. We’re supporting our partners to begin the response in Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Delhi, India based on coordination with local hospitals and clinics, to ensure supplies reach areas where they are needed most. The needs Identified to be most critical include oxygen tanks, tents and tubes, ICU beds, PPE, and decontamination units.

All proceeds generated from this fundraiser will go directly to support this emergency COVID-19 response in India.
